The Story of Sir Paul Smith
Paul Smith's introduction to fashion was entirely coincidental. At the age of 16, with no career plans or qualifications, Paul Smith was put to work by his father at the local clothing store in his hometown of Nottingham. His real passion was sports and his ambition was to become a professional cyclist, but that dream ended, when, as a 17-year-old, he suffered a terrible accident.
He was in the hospital for six months, during which time he made some friends who came to change his life. After leaving the hospital, they arranged to meet again, and quite by chance it was at a local pub, which ended up turning Paul Smith's life upside down. The pub was popular and much visited by students from the local art university. They talked about Mondrian, Warhol, Kokoshka, David Bailey and listened to The Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and more. And since then, Paul knew he wanted to be a part of this colorful world of ideas and excitement.
Over the course of two years, Paul Smith became store manager in Nottingham and with the backing of his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (now wife) and a small amount of savings, he opened a small store in 1970.
Paul began taking evening classes to learn how to tailor and with the help of Pauline (who had a master's degree in fashion), Paul was able to create exactly what he wanted. In 1976, Paul showed off his first menswear collection in Paris under the
brand; Paul Smith.

Paul Smith has become a brand that has become unique with classic British tailoring and style. Inspired by traditional British menswear - Paul Smith's greatest attribute is simplicity. He has described his designs as "well-made, simple cut, interesting fabric, easy to wear and good quality" and often adds a hint of vibrant color, a floral print or his signature multicolored stripes that we here at Spreeglee love and admire.
